How to create & export point cloud sections

NUBIGON offers versatile ways to create sections from point clouds and export them to your desired third-party application.

Define your plane

  • Launch the cross-section window from the sidebar.
  • Activate the Plane checkbox and specify your plane definition:
    • interactively in the viewport with Set plane
    • copy it from a section in the scene,
    • copy it from a plane in the scene,
    • or define the angles and origin parametrically.

Create section

  • Activate the Section checkbox.
  • NUBIGON will preview points within the Tolerance to the plane. You should consider increasing this parameter when working with sparse point clouds. Creating a section projects these points onto the plane and generates a 2D point cloud.
  • You can create up to 50 additional sections on either side of the main section with Add more. In this case, the Interval determines the distance between these sections.
  • Type a name, and finally press Create.

To create sections with more points, temporarily increase GPU cache in Preferences > Viewport Rendering.

Export section

  • To export a section as a point cloud file, select it in the Object List and press File > Export > Export Point Cloud
  • To export it as a DWG or DXF file, select it and go to File > Export > Export CAD. Exporting a section in the same coordinate system as the corresponding point cloud and more are explained here.
