Point cloud display modes

In NUBIGON, you can assign each point cloud a material. When opening a point cloud, a surface material is created and assigned to the point cloud. You can view, edit and re-assign materials from Object Inspector > Material Attributes.

Surface display mode

Size controls the “closeness” of a point cloud. When working with sparse point clouds, increase it slowly. Avoid overly large size values.

Color Smoothing improves visual quality and is checked by default. It represents the roughness of the surface. A small value makes for a rougher appearance, while a large value suggests a smooth surface. An overly large smoothness value will blend colors with the background.

Shaded renders a point cloud in a shaded mode and is compatible with all main display modes. We strongly recommend using it when using elevation or intensity color sources.

X-ray display mode

Increase Size to fill empty pixels in high-resolution orthophotos. Beware, high values dramatically affect viewport render performance, so stick with the default value when navigating scenes.

Range controls the brightness of points in the distance and the visibility of points nearby. It is checked by default. The larger the value, the brighter distant points, and the less visible the closer points will be.

Exposure in the scene is automatically adjusted and can also be customized using the White point parameter. Increase it to reduce over-exposure.

The Silhouette parameter emphasizes object outlines.

Our default x-ray mode will display dense areas bright and sparse areas dark, which is ideal when working with dark backgrounds. When working with light-colored backgrounds, enable Invert so dense areas are displayed darkly and sparse areas are displayed brightly.

X-ray display is not compatible with lighting.

Color source

Point color

Point color is the default color source and uses the color information in the point cloud file.

Object color

You can assign a custom color to your entire point cloud. When using this color source, check Shaded for optimal display.

Elevation

The maximum and minimum values are read from the point cloud bounding box. You can choose from predefined color scales or create your custom color scale.

To manually adjust the maximum and minimum values:

  • Press & hold X while you hover your mouse over the viewport.
  • The x-y-z coordinates of the point will be displayed in the Status bar.
  • Enter the preferred z-value as Max. or Min. elevation.

Intensity

To display intensity values, first, check if this information is available in the Object Attributes. The maximum and minimum values are read directly from the point cloud but can also be adjusted manually.  You can choose from predefined color scales or create your custom color scale.
